Smalti is a poured and hand cut glass valued for its saturated color and light refracting surface. It has been used in traditional Italian mosaic for centuries. It cannot be grouted because of its irregular surface, so these mosaic pieces are firmly glued and fitted to each other. There may be some sharp edges on the surface. Smalti is cut with a hammer and hardie.
